Phase 2 Details

Hello, Paracelsus friends!

We’ve gotten through the climax of Phase 1, which means it is time to look ahead to Phase 2. We’re not going to get into that until Week 19, to give ourselves and our characters some time to decompress. Nonetheless, it won’t hurt to get things on the table now!

Phase 2 will involve people looking for the Key; this will be led by investigators sent by the Houses, who are ostensibly there to look into the death of Otto von Schellenberg and what he was doing. This is part of why they’re there, and they will be working to that, but they also have orders to determine if the Key is in the Tower and put it underneath their control. They will also be co-opting students into helping them. They are divided into roughly three teams: one group sent by Castillo and Patisse, one group sent by Schellenberg and Weatherford, and a third sent by Vorinsky.

Each team has a coordinator on campus, among the faculty, who is helping direct these teams’ efforts and getting them permissions. A gentleman named Guillaume Patisse is the leader of the Patisse ands Castillo team. He is taking over Otto’s post in the school. Sarah-Beth Weatherford is the leader of the Schellenberg and Weatherford team. Mircea Vorinsky is the leader of the Vorinsky team.

Because of this, Phase 2 will involve more political intrigue than Phase 1. We also want this to be more organic and spontaneous, so the mods feel the best way to do this is by having the adult investigators available for application. In fact, we encourage it! You can also apply for or have an existing character be one of the students assigned to help them.

We’ll talk about adult characters first. The adults can be applied for here. Here’s the cliff’s notes version of what the investigators are like:
  • Loyalty: These individuals should be loyal to their House, at least at the outset; they were chosen because they’re trusted to look into something dangerous. We’re not saying don’t have conflicting loyalties, but they won’t send crazy loose cannons with no respect for the House elders.
  • Age and Experience: We’d like most of them to be 75 years old or younger. They’re either newbies or journeymen in their careers, who are sent out as arcane investigators to look at problems. They probably look between 20 and 40, given mage aging. They may have attended Paracelsus in the past, or one of the schools spelled out in the application for them.
  • Power Level: They get six skill slots, to spend as you see fit. In general, they are a boss fight for three to four students if they get into a fair fight. Of course, surprises happen, and this is not a hard and fast rule.

We’ll allow the investigators to stick around into Phase 3; however, we want the game to remain about the students, by and large, and we’ll be focusing the game’s narrative arc around them. We’ll keep the investigators as their own thing, so they don’t take over the kids’ role as the heroes (and possibly, ultimately, the villains) of the story.

Secondly, some students are being co-opted into helping; after all, investigators can’t very well blend into things and their movements are pretty obvious. Students will be picked on three criteria: because they’re felt to be loyal and effective, because they’re ambitious enough to want to impress, or because they’re in trouble and need to impress. We won’t require people sign their characters up, but it’s an option. They will also transfer new students to Paracelsus to help, so you can apply for one of them that way. If you’d like a student helping their associated investigation team, let us know.

Finally, our roster of Keepers and Slayers will get continued attention during the plot. Destiny or unfortunate circumstance has chosen them. And -- for better or worse -- the ranks of Keepers and Slayers may increase, as new people get involved. Their loyalties might be tested, too, especially as they find out who wants the Key and why.

Like Phase 1, we want Phase 2 to start off small and ramp up in intensity over time. We’ll be back to doing practicals, social events, and the like, so you can look forward to that, too!
